Andrea Lopez – Neuroscience
Bio – Andrea proudly grew up in the suburbs of Dallas, TX. Her mom is her best friend and one of their favorite hobbies is to go on spontaneous trips whether it’s to a new city or country! She spent last summer at the National Institute of Health researching a specific protein that is prominent in pancreatic cancer. She hopes to go back this summer to continue the same research.
What is your major & what do you plan to do with your major after college? I am currently majoring in Neuroscience on a premed track. I hope to go to med school, but if that doesn’t work out I hope to go to PA school or nursing school to become a nurse practitioner.
Why are you pursuing a degree in science? I’ve always loved science. It is the most intriguing and fascinating to me. I love hearing about creative ways that people answer questions. I love the process of learning what other people have done to answer other questions and connecting these sometimes-disparate pieces of knowledge together to weave an answer to my own questions. I love the excitement of teasing out a little bit more knowledge about our world today or our world before or our world some day. I love being surprised by the strange beauty and incredible complexity and unexpected twists and interdependent relationships that evolution has unwittingly gifted the living world with. And ultimately, I think what I love the most about science is constantly being surprised by the infinite nature of what people’s minds are capable of asking, seeing, molding, and connecting, and how our different perspectives and different experiences create a multitude of possible questions and ways to answer these questions.
How has being in a sorority impacted or inspired you to further your education or career in the science field? Being a science major is by no means easy, but being in a sorority has made my experience a lot easier. I can say without a doubt my sisters are my biggest support system and without them it would be extremely difficult to pursue what I love.
Sister Suggestions –
- Advice to another sorority sister – Don’t take your education for granted! Education is a privilege that we are all so blessed to have. Appreciating that privilege makes it so much more enjoyable and special.
- Tips for someone who may want to pursue a similar major – DON’T GIVE UP! It will not be easy but it is SOO worth it – I promise.
