Bio- Vanesse grew up in a rural town in western Massachusetts and she could not be happier to be able to go to college in Washington, D.C. She is a Filipino-Italian American girl with an unhealthy addiction to online shopping and a deep love for dogs. Vanesse is the person who reads the books after watching the movies, sorry not sorry. In high school, she once did a hero project on Emma Watson.
What is your major & what do you plan to do with your major after college? As a computer science major, I plan on pursuing a career in some kind of technology field: specifically cybersecurity or information technology. My ultimate goal is to work in those fields for the government on national security affairs.
Why are you pursuing a degree in science? Well first, I just like science and math. Second, it’s quintessential that more women start joining the field of science and I hope I can be part of and/or inspire that movement. Science is cool, ladies!
How has being in a sorority impacted or inspired you to further your education or career in the science field? Joining a sorority has been a constant reminder that there’s always someone out there rooting for me. Science isn’t easy and I do have my days of doubt and frustration, but my sisters are my support team and my biggest role models. They inspire me to be the very best version of myself and to always keep my head up.
Sister Suggestions –
- Advice to another sorority sister: Not trying something out of fear is the worst thing you can do.
- Tips for someone who may want to pursue a similar major: I’m not going to say that computer science is easy, but it can be a very rewarding experience. Don’t stress if your program doesn’t compile right away because your sisters are there to support you even when they don’t understand what that means.
